The French Development Agency (Agence Française de Développement - AFD) and the French Facility for Global Environment (Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial - FFEM) have decided to collaboratively fund a project that implements a regional dynamic developing fair trade in West Africa, to support the innovative approaches on fair trade and biodiversity conservation.
The French Development Agency (AFD) is a public institution at the core of the french cooperation system. It has been active for more than seventy years, fighting against poverty and promoting development in Southern countries.
It also supports the economical and social dynamism of overseas departments. It finances projects, programs and studies and supports its Southern partners in strengthening their capacities through the use of subventions, guarantee funds or contracts of debt relief and development contracts.
This project if financed by the AFD to the tune of 7.8 million euros.
The French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) is a two-way dispositive dedicated to protecting the world’s environment in developing countries. It is one of the instruments of French cooperation and development policy, working on climate change, biodiversity, international waters, soil degradation, etc.
The FFEM takes action in more than 100 countries, promoting North-South partnerships. It acts in liaison with the beneficiary countries and national or international partners : researchers, funding bodies, private companies, local collectivities, NGOs, foundations, etc. The FFEM is contributing to the funding of this project with 2.5 million euros.
The Program is managed by Commerce Equitable France (CEF) and Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders (Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières - AVSF)
Commerce Equitable France (CEF, formerly PFCE) is the French fair trade platform, which gathers the main French fair trade stakeholders, and aims to defend and promote this sector both on an institutional level and with the general public.
Commerce Equitable France gathers importers, the main certification schemes active on the French market, distribution networks specialized in organic and fair trade products, as well as NGOs supporting Southern countries and advocacy and awareness raising associations.
Commerce Equitable France has managed the first phase of the EQUITE Program, from 2016 to 2019.
Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders (Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières - AVSF) is a international solidarity association of public utility, acting since 1977 to support small family farming : it is an NGO committed to support fair trade, efficient in strengthening POs’ capacities and building networks. AVSF has been a historical support of the promotion of fair trade : it has contributed in the creation of fair trade certification schemes, such as Max Havelaar France, Ecocert Fairtrade, and the Small Producers Symbol (SPP). Thanks to its experience in strengthening producers organizations, and its cooperation with more than twenty countries, AVSF provides a field expertise that will ensure the smooth running and relevance of the Program.
